Photo Negative Archives
Photos from the Roach Studio collection and earlier Macon professional photographers have been made from negatives retrieved at the Billy Franke Studio in Macon, Missouri. After Mr. Franke’s death in 2015, the 5,317 glass negatives were donated to the Macon County History Museum by the Franke estate. Roach Studio was operated by photographer Aura Roach in Macon, Missouri from 1905-1935. The photos are dated from 1899-1935.
Partially funded by a grant from the State Historical Society, the photos have been cleaned, copied and stored in archival boxes at the Macon County History Museum.
None of the photos were identified or indexed, and an ongoing project has been to make them available for identification purposes via online access, as well as exhibiting them in presentations at the Macon Senior Center and the two Macon nursing homes.
Note: some photos may be disturbing to view. There are pictures that appear to be of sickly individuals, possibly patients at the Still-Hildreth Sanatorium. And, there are open coffin photos of deceased people.
If you can identify a photo, please email the information with the photo number to [email protected].
