The Civil War in Macon County
Macon Countians didn’t have to read in the paper that the Civil War was going on; all they had to do was look
and listen. The town of Macon was the headquarters of a prominent Federal post throughout the Civil War. The town presented at all times a military appearance. Soldiers were seen everywhere. Each sunrise was greeted with the
roll of a drum, and during the day the streets echoed with the tramp of marching squadrons. At times its military population was as great as its entire citizenship is now. Macon City was regarded by the Federal authorities as a good point for concentration of troops and as a strategic key to North Missouri from its railroad facilities. A military prison was established, and parties arrested in adjoining counties were brought to Macon for trial.
In the search for names of Civil War soldiers from Macon County, many Union soldiers were found, with only small numbers of Confederates. That is surprising considering that a number of people in the county were Southern in their sentiments. Sources indicate that about 700 men went into the Union army from Macon County, and about 600 into the
Confederate army.
Quite a few Macon County soldiers on the compiled list served in other states. And we know that Federal troops from Iowa, Illinois, Wisconsin and other Northwestern states were stationed here.
We are working to recognize the men from Macon County who fought in the Civil War with the following three projects:
1) MACON COUNTY CIVIL WAR SOLDIER PROJECT
The purpose of this project is to collect names of Civil War soldiers who were born, lived and/or died in Macon County, Missouri. We are asking for submission of known Macon County Civil War soldiers by using the Civil War Soldier form, or by clicking here and e-mailing the information of the Civil War soldier—name, spouse’s name, parents’ names, regiment, company, rank, and state mustered in.
To see the progress of this project, see Index of Macon County, MO, Civil War Index.
Macon County Historical Society Genealogy Library has the sources used to compile our list of Macon County Civil War soldiers. If you are interested please click this link to contact us.
2) NATIONAL GRAVE REGISTRATION PROJECT
This project is to locate the final resting places of all Union Civil War Veterans. Sons of the Union Veterans (SUV) are asking families to enter that information into the National Graves Registration Database .
3) VETERAN HEADSTONE OR MARKER PROJECT
The Government provides tombstones for ALL Veterans (and replacement for broken or unreadable stones.) If your
Veteran needs a headstone or marker, fill out the application.
