Four different tours are offered for individuals, couples, small groups or large groups. There is not a set charge, but we do ask for a donation for the museum. Persons taking the tour must provide the transportation for the driving tours.
The museum tour will cover the three stories of the Historical Society museum and a visit to the Lakeview Towers (the original Blees Academy building) if desired. The museum is handicap accessible.
The Civil War tour will be a driving tour through the Civil War areas of town including the stagecoach stop, the homes two different generals used for their headquarters, the site of the Allen Academy, the site of the business district at the time, the site of the prison, the site of the stockade, the Union Civil War hospital, the site of the camping area for the soldiers, and a visit to the cemetery where the Macon Massacre occurred to see the Rock. (A bus tour might not include the Rock because of going through the cemetery - it will depend on the driver.)
The Macon Historical Town Tour will cover as much of the town as you desire. Most tours will begin at the fairgrounds, go through the south part of town up Rollins Street, wind around through the north part of town, out to Oakhill, back in to town by the outer road to the west side of Macon to the square then take the southwest route back to the museum. Many historical happenings will be told about, plus you will see historic homes and Civil War sites.
Walking tour of downtown. The tour will start at the vacant area just north of the Maple Repertory Theatre, go north to Union, west on Union to Rollins, south on Rollins to Vine, east on Vine back to the theatre.
